David Frank, Steve Kipner ve Pamela Sheyne tarafından yazılan şarkı, 1999'da dünya çapında yayınlandı. Şarkı yayınlanmasını izleyen haftalarda dünya listelerinin zirvesine oturdu ve albümünü de Billboard 200 listesi başta olmak üzere birçok albüm listesinde zirveye oturttu. Aguilera, her ne kadar şarkıda ve şarkının klibinde fazlaca cinsel ögeler kullansa da, hitap ettiği yaş kesimi nedeniyle şarkının klibi başta olmak üzere tüm eser sansürlü olarak yeniden kaydedildi.
Şarkı Haziran 1999'da yayınlandıktan kısa süre sonra Billboard Hot 100 listesine giriş yaptı. Ardından hızla tırmanan şarkı, 5. haftasında zirveye oturdu ve 5 hafta zirvede kaldı. Şarkı, yıl sonunda ABD'de yılın en iyi 7. şarkısı seçilirken, Birleşmiş Milletler'in yılsonu listelerinde 4. sırada yerini aldı. Şarkı 2000'de Christina Aguilera'nın Britney Spears'ın önüne geçerek Grammy kazanmasında önemli rol üstlenmiştir. Şarkı, bugüne kadar Aguilera'nın Lady Marmalade'dan sonra en çok satan teklisi olmuştur.
Şarkı daha sonraları Sara Bareilles, The Dan Band, Speedway, Thrice, Ten Masked Men ve Evil Adam tarafından aynı adla; Hawaiian Ryan tarafından "Weenie In A Bottle" adıyla tekrar kaydedilmiştir. Teklinin B yüzünde "Blessed", "We're a Miracle" ve "Don't Make Me Love You ('Til I'm Ready)" adlı şarkılar yer almaktadır.
Aguilera da, şarkıyı 2008 yılında 2008 MTV Video Müzik Ödülleri gecesinde, o sıralarda yayınlanan yeni derleme albümünün tanıtımı için tekrar söylemiştir.

Christina debut albümü olan Christina Aguilera'yı çıkardı. Albümdeki Genie in a Bottle onun bu müzik dünyasına adım atmasını sağlayan şarkı olmuştur. What a Girl Wants ile de 1 numaraya yükselerek 2 hafta boyunca 1 numaradan inmemiştir. Come on Over Baby hiti de Christina'nın müzik dünyasında gelip geçici bir sanatçı olmadığını kanıtlamıştır. Albümün ilk şarkıları ilk 5 te yerinin almıştır. Böylece yılın en iyi yeni sanatçısı Grammy'sini kolayca göğüslemiştir. Bu albüm 12 milyondan fazla satmıştır.
2000 yılında Christina Aguilera albümünün İspanyolca'sı denebilecek bir albüm olan Mi Reflejo çıkmıştır. Albümde Christina Aguilera albümünün hit şarkıları olan 'Genie in a bottle' - 'Genio Atrapado', 'Come on over' - 'Ven Conmigo', 'What a girl wants' - 'Una Mujer' gibi ispanyolcaları yapılmıştır. Bunların yanısıra albümde El Beso Del Final, Contigo En La Distancia, Cuando No Es Contigo ve Falsas Esperanzas gibi yeni şarkıları da bulunuyordu. Bu Albümle Christina 2001 yılında Latin Grammy ödülü almıştır.
2001 de ise Ricky Martin ile birlikte Nobody Wants to be Lonely düetini yaparak Billboard listelerinde 11 numaraya Dünya listesinde ise 1 numaraya yükselmiştir. Christina bunun yanı sıra tüm dünyada listelerde 1 numara olan Moulin Rouge filminin soundtrack'i Lady Marmalade'ı Pink, Mya ve Lil Kim'le seslendirerek "Yılın En İyi Pop İşbirliği" Grammysine de sahip olmuştur.
